Battlestar theme music

One of the things that I find myself enjoying more and more about Battlestar Galactica is the music used in the show. Battlestar’s music seems to differ from that used in other shows in that it draws on tribal- and Eastern-sounding tones and patterns, rather than the heavy reliance on melodramatic strings that seems to characterize a lot of other music. The music tends to be quite organic, relying on real instruments rather than synthesized or electronic sounds.
While the music in Battlestar started off quite simple, using only a few different types of percussion, it seems to have developed over the seasons into something quite complex and varied. The variety of instruments used, as well as the particular types of music that are involved in the score have changed too, and it’s an interesting progression to follow. I often find myself attempting to pick apart the different types of instruments used, as well as how they’re used, or considering exactly how the music is making me feel the way I do—there’s no doubt that the soundtrack is very effective at guiding the viewer.
The Battlestar music is used to underscore particular characters and events—it has the effect of anchoring certain moments, or orienting the viewer in a particular way, and it’s very proficient at doing so. Of course, it isn’t surprising that a show such as Battlestar, which gets so much of the other stuff right, can up the ante with a soundtrack that breaks into new territory as well.
