Prequel problems

Battlestar fans will defend their favourite programme to the death. I’ve seen it happen at social events when a group of us have turned on a sci-fi fan who has said something innocent, yet dumb, like “I don’t see the difference between Battlestar and Star Trek”. We’re more likely to wear a bespoke wedding suit to the next Comic Con than admit that Battlestar might actually have its flaws.

Yet if we’re honest, there has been one major problem with the Battlestar shows; Caprica. This was the so-called ’prequel'that was more like a futuristic LA Law than the interplanetary excitement and intrigue we had come to expect from BG. So when I heard that another prequel was in development you’ll forgive me for not getting too excited. After all, I didn’t want to get let down like last time!

But there are signs that Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome might actually be worth getting excited over. It tells the story of William Adama as a young man and, more importantly, is back in space where any self-respecting sci-fi TV show or movie belongs. So far, so good. The only problem now is that Blood and Chrome has been “in development” for months, with no sign of any characters even being cast, let alone any episodes being produced. The Syfy channel had shown some initial interest, but are now making cryptic remarks that have lead many BG and sci-fi fans to speculate that they are only planning to make the show available online. I can understand their reluctance after getting their fingers burned on Caprica, but surely a new TV show that has the magic phrase “Battlestar Galactica” in its title has got to be worth at least a pilot episode?
